The United States Department of Agriculture operates two different food programs that combat child hunger across the nation by providing free meals. However, with less than ten percent of school-year recipients receiving summer meals, there is a major access gap for children in the summer months. The HPS Food Group looked at the National School Lunch Program and the Summer Food Service Program to understand just how big the gap is for the more than 27 million children who go without the free or reduced-priced meals they need.
